I bought a precision base off of you, the black one with the telecaster neck. I spoke to you at the anglers in West drayton many years ago and told you I now have a Rickenbacker, you said thats great if you use it as a cricket bat lol Remember me?

Comments: Hi good *** boys ! I don't dare using the word "old" in the same sentence with you guys, because you're lightyears away from being old. You do rock way more than any people in their twenties! Thank you so much for that wonderful show in Vienna. What a kick ass performance! A band full of masters of their respective instruments playing together so powerful and tight, no wanking-off effects included. Pure Rock'n'Roll at its best. Very hard to find these days. Outstanding talents you are. And, on top of that, extremely nice people, as we were allowed to learn later. Thank you for an unforgettable night and for sharing your time with us. See you somewhere down the road, that's for sure. God bless you all. Cheers, @xel

Comments: Hi Nick, I used to live in Ashford Avenue and used to hang around outside your house with some mates to listen to you rehearse? with the original DP You may or may not remember telling me that if I bought a guitar you would teach me which you duly kept your promise until you went on tour and sent me off to a guitar teacher in Southall who had also taught Pete Townsend. That incident and my Grammar school art teacher instilled an enduring love for music which I still have today. I occasionally saw the van around Brookside Road when I ventured back to Hayes every now and again and was glad to stumble on this website and read your story. I had forgotten how many good artists were in and around the Hillingdon area and also brought back memories of Steve Priest & Brian Conelly drinking in the Queens Head in among hordes of hairy arsed bikers and being completely unfazed. Best wishes for you and yours for the future.

Comments: Nick - "I'm so glad" to know you're still out there making music. I've been a fan of DP Mk1 since my early teens. Your bass lines were very influential as at age 15 I switched from piano to bass [as God intended!]. "Chasing Shadows" ranks as one of the greatest bass lines of all time. Thanks very much for inspiring me and providing untold numbers of hours of enjoyment listening to you play. God bless. May you enjoy long life filled with good times, good friends, and great music.

Comments: Mr. Simper: I really enjoyed going through your web pages and your comments on early Deep Purple. I always liked the first incarnation of that band, with favorite songs being "Why Didn't Rosemary," the last part of "April," and "The Shield." I have loved all incarnations of Purple, and for different reasons. In the original band I loved what you guys did with covers and some of the forays into literate psychadelia. It seemed like a band that was a band, not one visionary. By the way, I love the bass line on "Chasing Shadows." Take care and keep making music! Stephen Berg Minnesota (USA)

Comments: Dear lovely NICK SIMPER! Let me call you so and the reason is that first I heard you in far,far 1968-s,when your disk "Shades Of Deep Purple" appeared.I was shocked.I opened something new for me,something unknown at that it was unlike the other music, music which being unlike the other, impressed me,by it sinkere kindness. And when I saw your photo, can't forget it till nowadays.Every time, having got your next disk with great difficully,as the prices were and remain today too high(but usually it takes a lot of time before we can listen to your next disk) I immersed in your music world and imagined as if,I were together with you. Unforgettable time! You had everything on your way:success and disappointment, but the time proved that your are "the qiants of music"! I am glad with to every you success still many ,many years.I always wanted to know about your as much.I'm interested in both:your life and work. Will you, please help me ,if it's possible to know more about you not only as a musitian but as a person. We can understand music though the musitians thoughts and soul even if we don't understand the words in English.I would like to speak with you about everything. But it's a pity it's not possible to write everything in a letter. A letter is the only means communication with you... The only hope to meet you and to speak with you it's your concert. But in fortunately it's very difficult.Heardly I when nor be able arrive in Europe and USA single hope if you will arrive in Russia,we without fall a meet.Dreams... It is difficult for you to understand as it was earlier in the USSR (Soviet Union), with what difficulties to us the nextn albums of you reached. I remember those times when each new album got with the big work. Now them it is possible the find - truth bad piracy copies from China. In expensive dear shops it is possible to order and buy original disks, but they cost stand even more expensively the present true price... Now much has changed, I could see you "alive" in video, but remained as before impossibility to receive the autograph of you. I always dreamed, if not you then though musician you which works I really love and with pleasure I listen when some day will come and in my small world of the admirer you as a photo with his its autograph. But apparently it only dreams - miracles simply do not happen, and if are that only for " the elected public. But all the same, my love to music you remain with me for ever. And let dreams will not come true, but I trusted, and the belief and hope die the last... .My letter means you have reached, but I hoped to receive from your autograph-for me it is a limit dreams. With music of you I have lived the most part of the life and I wanted to have a part of this life having touched again by those unforgettable years of our youth by which part and were you.Forgive me,if I am too persevering. The you for me always was and will be that light with what the man lives. The thank for that you is.Let always success and our love will be with you. Dear lovely NICK SIMPER !I'm very sorry, but I have a request for you. Will you please send me your photo with your original autographs or just an answer on my letter. For me it would like... a present equal "the flight to the moon"! Oh,GOD!But it's just a dream,I even can't hope for it.There are no miracles in reality!? Having finishing my letter let me wish you everything a person can wish to his friends:a successful work and a lot of happiness in your life, and also to continue gladden your admirers with your songs.Thank the time thas has presented us such a wonderful musician and man.I want you to be happy and always young! We love and always will be with you. Comments: Something thats bugged me over the years, if Gillan hadn't brought Glover along and as I understand wanted him in the group, would you have stayed ie not got the Spanish Archer. Its funny how Blackmore would only stay after Gillan left if the bassist ie Glover went as well, although Glover ended up in Rainbow it seemed as if bassist duties were secondary to Glovers no doubt excellent production skills. Would be interesting to hear your comments and every one else who visits this excellent site. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Glover agreed you were the superior bass player and without a doubt I wholeheartedly agree

Comments: Hello Nick, How's things? I hope you and the family are well. It's been a while since Nan's (Aunt Elsie) funeral. I found this site and I wanted to send you this poem I wrote about Mosh. I have tried to send it through other sites before but I don't know if it got to you. MORRIE Built like a barn door and smartly turned out. His air as he walked, well you knew he had clout. I remember him first throwing me in the air, Pencil moustache and Brylcreem in his hair. He was pre-diagnosis as strong as an ox, But then he developed the Parkinson's pox. Involunt'ry twitching slurred speech and convulsions, To keep well away my initial compulsions. The drugs made him dribble whilst watching the cricket. Made me wonder if he was quite the full ticket. He endured Changi! This seasoned old soldier. I was wary of him when I should've been bolder! Two steps backward for every one forward, His frustrated face one could see he was tortured. Such a dignified man, so patient and kind, We often played Scrabble to strengthen his mind. Enduring this illness he never complained. 30 years in The Army and very well trained. Regrets looking back? One of lots I can think, I never took him down the pub for drink! (c)08/10/05 MICHAEL DENNIS www.myspace.com/michaelspoems garfieldpark@talktalk.net I hope you like it. Grandad was one of a kind. Correction. Morrie, Elsie, Clare and Rue in their own ways were each one of a kind. Please feel free to stop by my myspace site and have a look at some of my work. I write about life how I see it. People who read my work as they ride in my taxi have said that I could put them to music. I would be grateful if you could give me any tips on how to get started as I now feel that I have found what I want to do in life. Cheers Nick, All the best to you Janet and the family, Neil (If you are still wondering who this is I gave you Mosh's cartoon picture)

Comments: Very nice web site. The Deep Purple Mk1 sound, especially your out-front driving and oft exploratory bass playing made for some awsome tracks. "Hush," "Kentucky Woman" and "And the Address" are all XLNT examples. Here in the US, depending on what region one is in, "Hush" is still being played even more than the later (Mk2>)material.

Comments: The house that Jon Lord refers to is Deeves Hall in Hertfordshire. According to Jerry Bloom's book "Black Knight - The Ritchie Blackmore Story" Lord and Nick were sharing a room and experience a few weird things, such as tappings on the window and creaking floorboards. The building was reputedly haunted, although how much of it was down to Ritchie's penchant for practical jokes is open to question!

Comments: Saw on Youtube 1968 Playboy After Dark interview where Hefner asks Lord about forming a band and that you all lived together to get close but it ended up being a haunted house. Hefner glosses over it, but Jon Lord insisted that the house was haunted and saw it with his own eyes. What was the story? I can find no reference to this anywhere on the net.

Comments: Nick recently found this site, wish to say was into purple from 74 onwards and so only heard your input later on, still to this day play shades more than any original album, and the recent line ups without Lord/Blackmore are a travesty, its good to see players like yourself keeping the music live and if you tour the north east with the Good Old Boys will def see band. I suppose with what happened with purple you had every right to be bitter but have been impressed with dignified way you have dealt in interviews with that period of your life.

Comments: Hi Nick, I bought "Warhorse" first album back then when it was released, but being down here in NZ the second album never seemed to make it to these shores, it's been a while since then, but cruising the 'net recently, I took a look around - and sure enough there it was!! Red Sea! no doubt no waiting or considering - I had to get it! it's playing now as I write this! You guys put out some amazing rock back then, just a pity the group didn't carry on - you'd have been on the Legend list of 70's groups! (maybe you actually are!) I wonder what the chances are you you guys getting together and having a bit of a jam around and put a 2006/2007 CD out? Ha~ no it's not as crazy an idea as you might think! remember the guys from "Juicy Lucy" back around the same time period ? Glen Ross Campbell , Ray Owen... etc etc ... different lineup now, but they've got a new album coming out any day now!. Could you guys rock it out as you used to? ( that's a challenge by the way - case ya didn't pick up on it! ) No matter - all the very best.... I'll still continue to play Warhorse 1, and now Red Sea. and enjoy them. Stu'

Comments: I love the mark 1 Deep Purple. I think you and Rod done a great job for the band. Purple and Rainbow`s biggest down fall was the continuing change of personal. I believe Purples legacy would mirror that of Zeppelin had they kept loyalty with fellow musicans you and Rod are the best. Shame Rod hasn`t stayed with music. I wish he could be pardoned for the fake purple mistake (1980). Anyway take care and keep rocking! Thank you for the music and allowing fans like me access to you through this site.

Someone sent me an old Johhny Kidd & The Pirates black & white photo recently and said they found it on your web-site. So I thought I'd look you up Old Boy ! I'm still living over the pond here in the States, in Malibu & I have a place in Nashville now where my Recording Studio, Production Co and Publishing Company's have been based since 97. I spend about half the year or so in Nashville and when it gets too hot & sticky for an Englishman [in July & Aug] or too cold/wet [in Dec, Jan & Feb], I head out to the beach, a very simple plan really & it seems to be working ! Except for a weekend or two in London seeing "me mum" on the way back from MIDEM [or something] I really haven't been back to the UK for more than a day or two for a very long while now. I've been gone from London now since June 1976 [if you can believe that!] so, Old England's like a different world to me now. And what in the %&%# happened to the "English Music scene" ? You've got RAP over there too I hear, PLEASE. . say it ain't so ! Hey, if you get a spare minute, drop me a line at audiomediagroup@gmail [my Nashville email server] or at iamgltd@comcast [at the beach] & we'll chat, OK. . . Cheers, Mick Stewart.

Comments: I read your interview with interest, it was my understanding that Jim Byers and Adelle Kirk played in a band a couple of years ago and she left to do a couple of albums with Bascilica. She called Jim on return to London and asked him to put a band together. I have not heard the band yet, but have heard a lot of good things about them. I have known Jim and Adelle for some time, and while they wouldn't care who got the credit for putting the band together I think it's important people get the facts right. Look forward to hearing you sometime, say hi to Jim and Adelle (two Ls).

He doesn't own a computer at the moment, but he said he'll try and get some replies back to me when he can. He's got so many pictures and diaries - we will start posting his early stuff really soon. He was really pleased to see that he's still got so many fans from all over the world!

Comments: Hi Nick! I was searching for a "Nick Simper Hompage" since years. Congratualtion to this fine website. It looks fine. Exspecially the Q's an A's and the interviews are very interesting. A lot of very old questions are answered now. I love all Deep Purple line ups. But Mark I still special for me. The third album (with "April") is still one of my favourites and Warhorse is one of the best DP split groups. It would be fine to find some gifts here (fotos, nice downloads etc...). Hope to here more form you... Thank you for this website! Greetings from North-Germany Karl-Heinz

Comments: Good to see that you've now got yourself a website. I hope you get time to visit the message board and do some more Q&As and that upcoming gigs get plenty of advance notice. I've seen photos from the 1968 North American DP tour where you were playing what looked like a Fender Telecaster bass. What's the story behind that? Was it a short-lived experiment? Nigel
